Monday, June 28 – Friday, July 2, 2010

Organized by GLOBALEURONET and Instituto Figuerola of Social Science History , Universidad Carlos III Madrid.

The School is scientifically endorsed by the European Historical Economics Society

  • General Description

The main objective of the School is to provide attendants with a state-of-art survey of research topics and methods in the field of economic integration and spatial dynamics in historical perspective. Themes addressed will include the determinants and consequences of commodity market integration, institutional and social obstacles to integration, synchronization of business cycles, and historical dynamics of spatial agglomeration. The lecturers— Karl Gunnar Persson (Copenhagen) ; Giovanni Federico (European University Institute); David Jacks (Simon Fraser University); Albrecht Ritschl (LSE); Ulrich Woitek (Zurich); Max S. Schulze (LSE); Tim Leunig (LSE); Martin Uebele (Munster); Kerstin Enflo (Lund) —are well known international experts of related topics.

  • Programme

The Summer School has a duration of 5 days. Each day there will be two main lectures by invited speakers in the morning. In the afternoon simultaneous Student Sessions will take place, in which Ph.D. and Post-doc students will present and discuss their research papers with senior scholars. One novelty of this year’s Summer School is an afternoon research training module in which participants will be offered the opportunity to learn and practice advanced quantitative techniques. This year the module will focus on the use of Common Factor Analysis for data aggregation based on a large number of disaggregate data. A multi-factor version of the model with suitable identifying restrictions can be used to study interregional and international comovement, and offers interesting avenues for research on the emergence of the international business cycle, as well as on the historical process of regional and international price integration.
