  • General Description

The lead speaker for this Summer School, Nick Crafts (Warwick), is one of the most influential economic historians today, the author of path-breaking monographs, articles and contributions in books on economic growth, globalization and economic geography in historical perspective. He will be lecturing on issues such as the appropriate growth theories and policies, the role of economic policies in the success and failure of Western European growth in the second half of the 20th century, and the historical impact of trade policies on economic growth. The rest of lecturers—Cormac O’Grada (UC Dublin); Larry Neal (Un. Illinois and LSE); Giovanni Federico (European University Institute); Niko Wolf (Warwick)—are well known international experts of related topics, including the impact of trade on famines, the globalization of financial markets, trade policies and globalization, and the impact of borders on economic integration. This summer school will introduce students to the current research frontier in these areas.

  • Programme

The Summer School has a duration of 5 days. Each day there will be two main lectures by invited speakers in the morning. In the afternoon simultaneous Student Sessions will take place, in which Ph.D. and Post-doc students will present and discuss their research papers with senior scholars.

  • The Organizers

The school is organized by the ESF Research Networking Programme GLOBALEURONET in cooperation with the ICS University of Lisbon. The Programme aims to contribute to the development of a truly European economic history profession by analyzing the economic development of Europe as a whole. GLOBALEURONET organizes networking research activities and data collection at European level in areas such as welfare indicators, historical economic geography, business cycles, technological change, human capital and the diffusion of knowledge.
