Long-Term Energy and Growth: Workshop Meeting

Scientific Summary

The long term objective of the network is to create a data-base on energy that will be openly available for researchers, and to shed light on the crucial issue of how important energy is for economic growth. There will be many publications: conference papers, articles in referee journals, booklets on energy for the different countries, we also plan to write a textbook for undergraduate students that summarizes the main results in a pedagogic way and therefore also can be used for policy makers.

The work is proceeding along these lines and the suggested meeting is in order to facilitate further achievements. So far one booklet in a consistent series of booklets, using basically the same approach and methods, has been produced (Paolo Malanima on Italy), another one is in the publication phase (Paul Warde on UK) and there is yet another one that is soon finished (Sofia Henriques Teives on Portugal). Three more country specific booklets are being worked on (Mar Rubio on Spain, Ben Gales on the Netherlands and Magnus Lindmark on Norway). In addition, our group produced a comparative article for the most recent issue of European Review of Economic History.

The meeting in Stockholm has two purposes. One purpose is to disseminate and discuss the recent work and accomplishments of network members in front of a wider audience. For that reason we have placed the workshop in conjunction with a meeting of Swedish Economic Historians (approximately 130 people will attend), and we are organizing one session in this meeting. The second purpose is to discuss the LEG work among ourselves and plan ahead the activities of the network. Special focus in this meeting will be on the text-book objective.

Abstract

The LEG-meeting in Stockholm intends to disseminate the work of the group to a wider audience, which is made possible through the organization of a session in Ekonomisk-historiska mötet, where the group will present 4 papers. In addition the future work of the LEG network, especially the starting up of the book-project will be discussed.
